Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency which provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource for education that examines women's positions in the pop culture narratives was the result of her research. She also serves as the director of operations. As well as working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attack on women and as well as other minorities, she is determined to break the stereotypes in the pop culture. A graduate in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was fascinated by the issue of gender identity and women's rights at an early stage. She had a plan to start a web-based series that would examine the gender roles in video games and was the subject of a harassment online campaign. The woman was not stopped by the assault, in fact it only reinforced her drive to become an expert on media and feminism. She has won several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning journalist. She is also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture depictions of women.
