
DeWitt first performed on stage when she was 13 years old. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. In the summer of her stock production she was persuaded by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was given the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said that she had not encountered Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her role in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was one of the roles she was offered after she was cast in the pilot episode that followed. Janet was also a part of an episode of The Ropers in 1979. DeWitt began her acting career in an episode of 1984 on Three's Company. She made her return to the stage in the month of June in 1991 in which she appeared on a Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. One of her roles was in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured a character based on her. It was voiced in part by another actress. The actress was in the episode Cybill and also made an appearance on Living Single's final episode. Her 2000s TV works included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as and Call of the Wild.
